ABOUT US
St. Carmen Sallés y Barangueras
St. Carmen Sallés y Barangueras was born on April 9, 1848, the first daughter of José Sallés and Francisca Barangueras. Living in Vic, near Barcelona, in Spain, she was the second of ten children of her parents. Two days after, she was baptized with the name “Carmen”, in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Her parents gave her a firm Catholic education, and enrolled her in the school of “Compañía de María” where she learned to love the feast of the Niña María. She received God’s call to become Christ’s bride after a pilgrimage in Montserrat. She turned down her parents’ plan to marry and entered religious life in the Adores Sisters as a novice where she cared for the needy women of the society. She then moved to the Dominican Sisters of the Annunciation where she taught in schools, taking priority for the girls who have little or no education at all. She was discriminated in the congregation because of her ideas, but God always provides. She prayed and sensed her surroundings, waiting for God’s will for her. Along with Sisters Candelaria, Remedios and Emilia, they went to Burgos, Spain and on December 7, 1892, the Archbishop of Burgos granted a Diocesan approval to the “Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception” and authorized the opening of the first Conceptionist school. The congregation founded more schools she called “the Houses of Mary Immaculate” and with her fellow sisters, they went through all corners of Spain. Seeing her hard labor, God saw it best to call her back to Him. She received her heavenly reward on July 25, 1911, at 63 years of age. A year after, a group of sisters voyaged to the New World, in the country of Brazil. Her holy life was recognized when Pope St. John Paul II beatified her on March 15, 1998, during the Centennial Anniversary of the congregation. She was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 21, 2012.
St. Carmen Salles School Cavite
The Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of Mary is an international religious congregation founded by St. Carmen Sallés in 1892, in Burgos, Spain. For over 133 years, the Sisters have faithfully dedicated themselves to the service of humanity through the holistic education of children and youth across various countries around the world. Their missionary journey in the Philippines began in 1986, with the establishment of their first house in Manila, where they built a dormitory for young university women. In 1996, the Sisters extended their mission to Bacolod, Negros Occidental, where they constructed another dormitory for female university students. In 2002, they founded the Blessed Carmen Sallés School, initially offering Pre-School and Elementary education. Following the canonization of their Mother Foundress on October 21, 2012, the school was renamed St. Carmen Sallés School in 2013 to honor her sainthood. The school achieved another milestone in School Year 2014–2015 with the opening of the Junior High School, followed by the introduction of the Senior High School in School Year 2017–2018. In 2017, the school celebrated its 15th founding anniversary, which coincided with the 125th anniversary of the Congregation. In 2018, the Sisters inaugurated a new branch in Quezon City, offering Kindergarten education. This was followed by the establishment of St. Carmen Sallés School – Cavite in 2019, located in General Trias City, which began offering Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten programs. The school has since expanded to include Elementary education and is set to open its Junior High School level in School Year 2025–2026, with plans to offer Senior High School in the coming years. Through these developments, the Missionary Sisters continue to live out their charism of providing a faith-based, liberating, and transformative education inspired by the values and vision of St. Carmen Sallés.
